This project is a composite of a photo and digital artwork. I shot the original image myself and created all the effects in Photoshop, Illustrator, and Indesign.
The imaginary band, "The Glory of Ten", is a girl band comprised of four members. The music is techno, pop with electric strings.
I chose to use a powerful image of a woman as my focal point. She has a sword and an electric guitar which I feel gives a sense of female empowerment. I decide to do an art cutout for the hoodie even though I shot the model wearing a hoodie. I liked how that looked and felt that it added to the ambiguity of her figure by removing sex appeal. The overall theme is tying in the mythical and so I added into the concept of the band other electric strings like violins and cellos, which instill a classical music feel mixed with the modern. I feel like the band aesthetic is “Gwen Stefani” meets “Bond”, (“Bond” is an electric string girl band).
The sword became the inspiration for the majority of the design so I’m going to include the swords story to show my thinking with the imagery. The swords name is longer, but I chose to drop off the word “powers”. I used the black and white in my design to represent yin and yang. “The Glory of Ten Powers is a pair of swords, composed of one katana and one wakizashi, that have circular tsuba with similar designs, formed from the Truth-Seeking Balls with the help of the Adorned Branch of Hōrai technique, wielded by Seireitou Hyūga. These blades are noticeably darkened in coloration, reflecting the blackness of the Truth-Seeking Ball's original state, which are highly compressed variations of the latter, carrying incredibly density and strength when used in both offensive and defensive situations. According to Seireitou, this is when "yin" and "yang" are brought to their greatest state of synergy; the name, "ten powers", being in reference to the Ten-Tailed Beast's Jinchūriki, whom commonly appears to have ten of the Truth-Seeking Balls surrounding their person at all times. It has been said that the power of these blades rivals that of the Sword of Nunoboko, if not outright surpassing its overall strength due to their compressed albeit stable form.” “The Glory of Ten Powers (十神力, Shíshénlì) is a legendary sword in chinese folklore, said to have been forged by a husband and wife that belonged to the ancient Bon traditions. It is said that the love between these two were so strong, that the blade itself reflected upon it and manifested a spirit that served as its embodiment, granting the sword magical abilities that protected its wielder. This aspect was taken and instead used to represent the words Madara Uchiha spoke regarding Yin and Yang working together to bring the universe into balance, which produced, in this case, a pair of two swords.” Truth-seeking balls or chakra balls were used to forge the sword. “Truth-Seeking Balls are orbs of malleable black , which can alter their form and characteristics in various ways. Though only the size of a fist, each hides within it the power to obliterate an entire forest.” I chose to use the traditional colors for the different chakras instead of just black. I feel like the chakra balls give the feeling of techno pop with their fun bright colors. The electricity flowing from the energy of the balls showcases the electric instruments.
